Brief Introduction to Antivirus Software:

The software that detects and quarantines viruses that can infect computer files and interrupt normal system operation is referred to as Antivirus Software. Virus Scanner is another common term for this type of software. Methods of Virus Detection:

1) In the primary method of virus detection, files are scanned for patterns which have been previously identified as viruses.

2) In the second approach, the software computes a checksum for each file to be monitored and stores the information in a database. Subsequently, every time the file is opened its checksum is calculated and compared to that stored in the data base. Only in the event of a difference between the checksums is the file scanned for virus patterns.

The second method is considered to be preferable since the computation of the checksum is quicker than scanning the whole file for a virus pattern.

Spam Filtering Software

It basically refers to a useless email that is repeatedly received by a particular user. The best way to avoid spam is by protecting your email address, setting up of multiple email accounts, Usage of antispam software, antispam filters, reporting violators and many more.

Spam Filtering or Antispam Software is a program that is used to detect unsolicited and unwanted email and prevent those messages from getting to a user's inbox. Like other types of filtering programs, a spam filter looks for certain criteria on which it bases judgments. For example, the simplest and earliest versions can be set to watch for particular words in the subject line of messages and to exclude these from the user's inbox. This method is not especially effective, too often omitting perfectly legitimate messages (these are called false positives) and letting actual spam through. More sophisticated programs, such as Bayesian filters or other heuristic filters, attempt to identify and block spam through suspicious word patterns or word frequency.

Content or Web Filtering Software

Content filtering is the use of a program to screen and exclude from access Web pages or email that is deemed objectionable. Content filtering is often used by corporations as part of an Internet firewall appliance and also by home computer users, especially by parents to screen the content their children have access to on the Internet. Content filtering software usually works by scanning for character strings that, if found, indicate undesirable content which is then screened out. Content is typically screened for pornographic content and sometimes also for violence or hate oriented content. Critics of content filtering programs point out that it is not difficult to unintentionally exclude desirable content. Apart from blocking access to undesirable websites this software also records the activities of users with regard to what websites have been opened and how much time has been spent visiting each website.
